Amazon S3 now supports advanced compaction techniques for Apache Iceberg tables, improving query performance and reducing costs:

  • Sort compaction minimizes data file scans during queries
  • Z-order compaction enables efficient file pruning across multiple columns
  • Fully managed compaction available in S3 Tables with automatic hierarchical sorting
  • Users can enable compaction through S3 Tables maintenance API or AWS Glue Data Catalog
  • Available in all AWS Regions supporting S3 Tables or AWS Glue Data Catalog optimization

These new features aim to enhance query performance and reduce computational overhead when working with Apache Iceberg tables in Amazon S3.
