Amazon S3 has expanded compaction support for Apache Iceberg tables to include Apache Avro and ORC file formats, in addition to the existing Parquet format support.
- Supports compaction across S3 Tables and general purpose S3 buckets with AWS Glue Data Catalog
- Allows writing data in Avro and ORC formats for specific workloads like data ingestion and streaming
- Automatically compacts small files to improve query performance and reduce costs
- By default, converts Avro and ORC files to Parquet for optimal read performance
- Available in all AWS Regions where S3 Tables or AWS Glue Data Catalog optimization are supported
This enhancement provides more flexibility in data format management and performance optimization for Apache Iceberg tables stored in Amazon S3.
