Amazon has expanded S3 Metadata capabilities to support existing objects and reduced pricing by 33%.
- Now supports metadata creation and management for all existing S3 data
- Creates two Apache Iceberg tables: a journal table and a live inventory table
- Journal table tracks near real-time changes like object uploads, deletions, and lifecycle transitions
- Live inventory table provides an up-to-date view of all objects in an S3 bucket
- Queryable through SQL using services like Amazon Athena, EMR, and open-source tools
- Currently available in US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), and US West (Oregon)
- Pricing reduced to make change tracking and backfilling more cost-effective
The update enables easier data discovery and management for S3 storage users.
