Amazon SQS introduces fair queues for multi-tenant workloads

News

Amazon SQS has introduced fair queues for multi-tenant standard queues, addressing the noisy neighbor problem in shared queue environments.

  • Helps mitigate performance issues when one tenant sends excessive messages
  • Preserves quality of service by keeping messages flowing for all tenants
  • Requires adding a message group ID when sending messages
  • No changes needed for message consumers
  • Useful for SaaS applications, microservices, and multi-request processing
  • Maintains consistent message dwell time across tenants
  • Available in all AWS commercial and GovCloud (US) Regions

This feature enables more reliable and fair message processing in shared queue environments without disrupting existing systems.
