Beyond accelerators: Lessons from building foundation models on AWS with Japan’s GENIAC program

Machine Learning Blog

The article discusses AWS's involvement in Japan's GENIAC (Generative AI Accelerator Challenge) program, which aims to support foundation model development by providing compute resources and technical guidance to 12 participating organizations.

  • AWS deployed over 127 P5 instances and 24 Trn1 instances in a single day across multiple regions
  • Successfully trained multiple large language models, including a 32B multimodal model and a 405B multilingual model
  • Created cross-functional engagement teams to provide comprehensive support
  • Developed reference architectures using AWS ParallelCluster and SageMaker HyperPod
  • Conducted enablement sessions and workshops to help teams understand large-scale AI training

The key lesson was that training foundation models is more of an organizational challenge than a hardware problem, requiring structured support, reproducible templates, and cross-functional collaboration.
