How HashiCorp made cross-Region switchover seamless with Amazon Application Recovery Controller

Architecture Blog

HashiCorp improved its disaster recovery capabilities by implementing Amazon Application Recovery Controller (ARC), solving critical challenges in cross-Region failover processes for their cloud platform.

  • Transformed manual, error-prone failover procedures into an automated, codified process
  • Created a custom failover service that uses ARC to seamlessly switch traffic between Regions
  • Implemented a DNS architecture with Route 53 failover records linked to ARC routing controls
  • Developed a signaling mechanism using TXT DNS records to indicate active Region across services
  • Established a monthly disaster recovery testing program to ensure operational readiness

The solution reduced recovery times, increased operational confidence, and transformed disaster recovery from a specialized procedure to a standardized, reliable process.
