Introducing Budget Controls for AWS: Automatically Manage Your Cloud Costs

Cloud Financial Management Blog

AWS introduces Budget Controls for AWS, an open-source solution designed to help new AWS users manage cloud costs automatically by monitoring spending and taking predefined actions.

  • Uses a custom `BudgetControlAction` tag with three values: Inform, Stop, and Terminate
  • Automatically triggers actions when spending reaches 80% (alert) and 90% (action) of budget
  • Supports resources like EC2, RDS Aurora, SageMaker, and OpenSearch
  • Utilizes AWS services like AWS Budgets, AWS Config, and AWS Lambda to monitor and manage resources
  • Provides an easy deployment process through CloudFormation with minimal configuration

The solution offers a safety net for teams, students, and developers exploring AWS, ensuring cloud expenses remain controlled while allowing confident experimentation.
