Improve Kubernetes pod scheduling accuracy using Amazon EBS

Storage Blog

This article discusses a new feature in Amazon EKS 1.34 that improves Kubernetes pod scheduling accuracy for Amazon EBS volumes by addressing volume attachment capacity limitations.

  • The new "Mutable CSI Node Allocatable Count" feature enables real-time capacity updates for Kubernetes clusters
  • Solves the problem of pods getting stuck in ContainerCreating state due to outdated volume attachment information
  • Automatically refreshes node volume attachment capacity every 10 seconds by default
  • Provides immediate recovery when a volume attachment fails due to capacity limits
  • Works with EBS CSI driver version 1.46.0 and above

The enhancement allows more accurate pod scheduling by dynamically tracking available volume attachment slots, preventing workload failures in multi-tenant Kubernetes environments.
