Using Kubernetes Labels to Split and Track Application Costs on Amazon EKS

Cloud Financial Management Blog

AWS has announced support for Kubernetes labels in split cost allocation data for Amazon EKS, enabling more granular cost tracking and attribution for applications running on shared Kubernetes clusters.

  • Allows importing Kubernetes labels as cost allocation tags in AWS Cost and Usage Reports
  • Helps organizations attribute costs across teams, departments, and applications
  • Supports two key use cases: tracking Spark application costs and calculating total application cost of ownership
  • Enables detailed cost visibility by linking Kubernetes pod labels with AWS resource tags
  • No additional charge for the feature, though standard S3 storage fees apply

To implement, users must enable split cost allocation data in AWS Billing Console, activate cost allocation tags, and set up a Cost and Usage Report with split data option.
