New Amazon CloudWatch metrics to monitor EC2 instances exceeding I/O performance

News

Amazon has introduced two new CloudWatch metrics to help users monitor EC2 instance I/O performance with EBS volumes:

  • Instance EBS IOPS Exceeded Check
  • Instance EBS Throughput Exceeded Check

Key features of these metrics include:

  • Return value of 0 (no performance exceeded) or 1 (performance exceeded)
  • Available by default at 1-minute frequency with no additional charges
  • Applicable to all Nitro-based EC2 instances with EBS volumes
  • Accessible via EC2 console, CLI, or CloudWatch API

Users can create custom dashboards and set alarms to monitor and respond to performance issues, such as moving to larger instances with higher EBS-Optimized limits.
