Amazon DocumentDB has announced a new query planner (PlannerVersion 2.0) for MongoDB compatibility with significant performance improvements:

  • Up to 10x faster query performance
  • More optimal index plans
  • Enhanced index scan support for negation operators
  • Better cost estimation techniques
  • Simplified query syntax

Key features include improved performance for find and update operators, support for $regex queries without explicit hints, and easy enablement across all AWS Regions supporting DocumentDB 5.0. The upgrade can be implemented without cluster restart or downtime.
