AWS IoT Core adds location resolution capabilities for Amazon Sidewalk enabled devices

News

This article announces location resolution capabilities for Amazon Sidewalk-enabled IoT devices through AWS IoT Core, enabling asset tracking and geo-fencing without GPS hardware.

  • AWS IoT Core Device Location resolves approximate device locations using WiFi, satellite, or Bluetooth data
  • Eliminates need for GPS hardware in low-power IoT devices
  • Uses Amazon Sidewalk community network through compatible Echo and Ring devices
  • Geo-coordinate data delivered to AWS IoT rules or MQTT topics for backend integration
  • Requires Sidewalk SDK v1.19 or later and device provisioning in AWS IoT Core
  • Available in US-East (N. Virginia) region; Amazon Sidewalk network US-only

This enhancement simplifies location-based IoT applications by leveraging existing Sidewalk infrastructure for device positioning without additional GPS hardware.
