AWS Cloud WAN Routing Policy: Fine-grained controls for your global network (Part 1)
Networking & Content Delivery Blog
This article introduces AWS Cloud WAN Routing Policy, a new capability enabling fine-grained control over global network traffic routing and path optimization.
- Route filtering allows blocking or selectively propagating routes across attachments and regions
- Route summarization aggregates outbound routes on Cloud WAN attachments
- Path preferences configured via BGP attributes (local preference, AS_PATH, MED) influence traffic paths
- BGP communities now transitively pass between inbound and outbound route updates
- Requires Cloud WAN policy version 2025.11 or later
- Policies consist of match conditions, actions, and directionality (inbound/outbound)
- Enhanced Route Information Base (RIB) provides visibility into learned routes before policy application
- No additional charges; supported on all attachment types with some limitations
Cloud WAN Routing Policy enables organizations to optimize network performance, prevent suboptimal routing, implement geo-centric Internet egress, and build resilient hybrid architectures with sophisticated route management controls.
