Announcing replication support and Intelligent-Tiering for Amazon S3 Tables

AWS News Blog

This article announces two new capabilities for Amazon S3 Tables: Intelligent-Tiering storage class and replication support for Apache Iceberg tables.

  • Intelligent-Tiering automatically optimizes costs by tiering data across three access tiers based on usage patterns
  • Data moves to Infrequent Access after 30 days, Archive Instant Access after 90 days without access
  • Infrequent Access costs 40% less; Archive Instant Access costs 68% less than Infrequent Access
  • Replication support maintains consistent read-only table replicas across AWS Regions and accounts
  • Replicas update within minutes and support independent encryption and retention policies
  • Replica tables queryable via SageMaker Unified Studio or any Iceberg-compatible engine
  • No additional charges for Intelligent-Tiering; pay only storage costs per tier
  • Replication pricing includes destination storage, PUT requests, updates, and data transfer costs
  • Both features available today in all AWS Regions supporting S3 Tables

These capabilities simplify cost management and data distribution for organizations working with tabular data at scale.
