AWS Load Balancer Controller adds general availability support for Kubernetes Gateway API

Networking & Content Delivery Blog

This article announces general availability of AWS Load Balancer Controller support for Kubernetes Gateway API, enabling standardized traffic management for Kubernetes clusters on AWS.

  • Gateway API provides role-oriented design separating infrastructure, cluster operators, and application developer concerns
  • Supports L4 routes (TCP/UDP) with NLB and L7 routes (HTTP/gRPC) with ALB
  • Replaces annotation-based configuration with type-safe Custom Resource Definitions (CRDs)
  • Enables cross-namespace traffic routing with RBAC boundaries between teams
  • Automatic TLS certificate discovery from AWS Certificate Manager
  • Three new CRDs: TargetGroupConfiguration, LoadBalancerConfiguration, ListenerRuleConfiguration
  • Real-time status updates provide provisioning progress and error messages
  • Integrates with ACM, AWS WAF, Shield Advanced, and CloudWatch

AWS Load Balancer Controller Gateway API support modernizes Kubernetes networking with standards-based, portable configurations while maintaining AWS-specific customization capabilities and operational visibility.
