Introducing enhancements to Amazon EMR Managed Scaling
Big Data Blog
This article introduces Advanced Scaling enhancements to Amazon EMR Managed Scaling, enabling fine-tuned cluster resource optimization through a utilization-performance slider.
- Advanced Scaling uses UtilizationPerformanceIndex (1, 25, 50, 75, 100) to tailor scaling behavior
- Utilization optimized (1): Conservative scaling, lowest cost, best for regular workload spikes
- Balanced (50): Balances performance and utilization, recommended starting point
- Performance optimized (100): Aggressive scaling, fastest job completion, ideal for SLA-sensitive workloads
- Avoids custom autoscaling issues: shuffle-aware, driver-aware, faster response times
- Testing showed job times: 759s (index 1), 421s (index 50), 376s (index 100)
- Available via API; console support coming soon
Advanced Scaling provides granular control to optimize EMR clusters for specific business requirements, balancing cost efficiency and performance based on workload patterns.
