Introducing OpenTelemetry & PromQL support in Amazon CloudWatch

AWS Cloud Operations Blog

This article introduces OpenTelemetry metrics ingestion and PromQL query support in Amazon CloudWatch, enabling unified metrics management across infrastructure, containers, and applications.

  • CloudWatch now natively ingests OpenTelemetry metrics with up to 150 labels per metric
  • PromQL query language support for querying metrics directly in CloudWatch and Grafana
  • Automatic AWS resource enrichment adds account, region, cluster, and tag context automatically
  • Container Insights for EKS now supports OpenTelemetry and Prometheus metrics
  • Custom application metrics via OpenTelemetry SDK automatically enriched with AWS context
  • No additional cost during preview; available in five AWS regions
  • Eliminates need for separate Prometheus backends and metric exporters

This capability consolidates metrics pipelines into CloudWatch, supporting high-cardinality labels and automatic AWS resource context without additional instrumentation or API calls.
