Amazon Redshift adds ALTER TABLE for Iceberg tables and writes via the AWS Glue Data Catalog mount
News
This article announces new capabilities for Amazon Redshift to support Apache Iceberg tables, including direct writes via AWS Glue Data Catalog and ALTER TABLE DDL statements.
- Write directly to Iceberg tables through auto-mounted awsdatacatalog without external schemas
- ALTER TABLE operations: ADD/DROP/ALTER columns, RENAME COLUMN, modify properties
- Adjust partitioning strategies with ADD/DROP/REPLACE PARTITION FIELD
- Modified tables remain compatible with EMR, Athena, and other Iceberg engines
- AWS Lake Formation permissions supported for Iceberg write operations
- Available in all AWS Regions where Redshift operates
These features simplify data lake workflows by enabling schema modifications without table deletion, improving pipeline efficiency and cross-engine interoperability.
