This article announces the general availability of Amazon Aurora MySQL 8.4, compatible with community MySQL 8.4.7, introducing a simplified versioning model and enhanced security features.
- Aurora MySQL versions now align directly with community MySQL Long Term Support releases
- New versioning structure: 8.4 (major) + minor version, with AWS managing patches automatically
- Enhanced security defaults: caching_sha2_password authentication, TLS 1.2/1.3 enforced, modern cipher suites only
- Password validation component customizable through DB cluster parameter groups
- Automated upgrade prechecks identify compatibility issues before major version upgrades
- Multiple upgrade paths: Blue/Green Deployments, in-place upgrade, snapshot restore, AWS DMS, Percona XtraBackup
- Replication terminology updated; legacy stored procedures removed in Aurora MySQL 8.4
- Available in all AWS Regions where Aurora MySQL is supported
