AWS CLI v1 maintenance mode: announcing changes to dependency updates

Developer Tools Blog

This article announces changes to AWS CLI v1 dependency management as it enters maintenance mode on July 15, 2026.

  • botocore and s3transfer will be vendored (bundled) into AWS CLI v1
  • AWS CLI v1 will no longer rely on standalone dependency packages
  • Upgrading AWS CLI v1 will no longer upgrade standalone botocore and s3transfer
  • Environments with both AWS CLI v1 and boto3 will contain duplicate library copies
  • Standalone packages continue updating for boto3, but won't affect AWS CLI v1
  • AWS recommends migrating to AWS CLI v2 for latest features
  • Users should explicitly pin dependency versions if other applications consume them

AWS CLI v1 users should migrate to v2 to ensure access to latest AWS services and features, as v1 will only receive critical bug fixes and security updates.
