Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus now supports Native Histograms
News
This article announces that Amazon Managed Service for Prometheus now supports Prometheus native histograms for improved metric distribution tracking.
- Native histograms enable high-resolution metric distributions with lower cardinality than classic histograms
- Exponential bucketing automatically adapts resolution to data without pre-defining bucket boundaries
- Reduces active series count significantly (22 series reduced to 1 for 20-bucket histograms)
- Provides more precise tail-latency insights and percentile calculations
- Supports incremental adoption alongside existing classic histograms
- Charges based only on populated buckets with actual observations
- Available in all AWS Regions where the service is offered
Native histograms enable DevOps and SRE teams to monitor latency and distributions more accurately while reducing storage overhead and costs.
