This article announces zone-aware routing for ECS Service Connect, which reduces cross-AZ data transfer costs and latency by prioritizing service-to-service traffic within the same availability zone.

Automatically routes requests to endpoints in the same AZ as originating tasks
Dynamically adjusts traffic weights as endpoints scale for balanced load distribution
Automatically redistributes traffic across healthy AZs when local endpoints become unhealthy
Enabled by default for all new and existing services with no infrastructure changes
Available in all AWS commercial and GovCloud regions at no additional cost
Monitor cross-AZ traffic using Amazon VPC Flow Logs with AZ metadata
