Isolate email suppression per tenant with Amazon SES

Messaging & Targeting Blog

This article explains how Amazon SES tenant-level suppression lists solve cross-tenant contamination in multi-tenant email platforms by isolating bounce and complaint data per tenant.

  • Tenant-level suppression prevents one tenant's poor email hygiene from blocking other tenants' valid recipients
  • Each tenant maintains an isolated suppression list controlled by the PutTenantSuppressionAttributes API
  • Suppression scope can be set to TENANT (isolated) or ACCOUNT (shared default)
  • Suppression precedence order: Configuration Set > Tenant > Account
  • Hard bounces add addresses to both tenant and global lists; complaints add to tenant list only
  • Backward compatible and opt-in per tenant; existing account-level suppression unchanged
  • Ideal for SaaS platforms, marketing automation providers, digital agencies, and enterprises with multiple brands

Tenant-level suppression enables fair deliverability outcomes and reduces support burden by giving each tenant independent control over their email reputation.
