AWS Lambda now supports Java 8, 11, and 17 on Amazon Linux 2023

AWS Lambda now supports Java 8, 11, and 17 runtimes on Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023), providing a migration path from end-of-life Amazon Linux 2.

  • New Java 8, 11, and 17 runtimes available as managed runtimes and container base images on AL2023
  • Amazon Linux 2 reached end of life on June 30, 2026; migration required for SLA eligibility
  • AWS recommends upgrading to Java 21 or Java 25 on AL2023 as preferred migration path
  • AL2-based Java 8, 11, 17 runtimes receive security patches until June 30, 2027
  • New runtimes available in all AWS Regions including GovCloud and China Regions

Customers can now migrate Lambda functions to AL2023 while maintaining their current Java versions, with extended support for legacy runtimes during transition.
