Transfer Amazon S3 data from commercial AWS Regions to AWS European Sovereign Cloud using AWS DataSync Enhanced mode

Storage Blog

This article demonstrates how to transfer Amazon S3 data from commercial AWS Regions to AWS European Sovereign Cloud using AWS DataSync Enhanced mode with secure credential management via AWS Secrets Manager.

  • AWS DataSync Enhanced mode enables cross-partition data movement without requiring agent deployment
  • AWS Secrets Manager securely stores and manages IAM credentials for cross-partition authentication
  • Solution includes four stages: destination setup, source setup, task creation, and progress monitoring
  • Create IAM user and policy in sovereign partition with minimum permissions for S3 bucket access
  • Configure source and destination locations with object storage endpoint and credential management
  • Schedule tasks to run hourly, daily, weekly, or custom intervals with verification checks
  • Monitor progress via AWS DataSync console and Amazon CloudWatch logs
  • Costs include DataSync transfer fees, task execution fees, S3 requests, data transfer OUT, and destination storage

Organizations can now securely transfer data between commercial and sovereign AWS partitions while maintaining encryption in transit, data validation, and comprehensive monitoring for compliance requirements.
