Amazon S3 Object Lock now supports variable retention with event holds

Amazon S3 Object Lock now supports event holds for variable retention, allowing WORM protection based on future events like contract closings or audit completions.

• Place event holds with retention duration; S3 protects objects while hold is active
• Upon hold release, S3 automatically retains objects for specified duration
• Apply event holds to individual objects, set as bucket defaults, or use S3 Batch Operations
• New IAM and bucket policy condition keys control hold permissions and enforce duration limits
• CloudTrail logs all hold operations; S3 Inventory reports hold status
• Available in all AWS Regions including China at no additional charge
• Compliant with SEC Rule 17a-4(f), FINRA Rule 4511, and CFTC Regulation 1.31

Event holds enable event-based retention compliance without unnecessary data retention beyond policy requirements.
