Connect Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio to Microsoft Power BI – Part 2: IAM-based domains

Big Data Blog

This article demonstrates how to connect Microsoft Power BI to Amazon SageMaker Unified Studio using IAM-based domains with the Amazon Athena ODBC driver's native SageMakerIam authentication.

  • Configure AWS IAM Identity Center permission sets and profiles for ODBC driver credential provisioning
  • Method 1: DSN-based connection using Amazon Athena connector supporting DirectQuery and Import modes
  • Method 2: DSN-less connection using Power BI ODBC connector with connection strings for Import mode only
  • Set up on-premises data gateway on EC2 with IAM role for Power BI Service report access
  • Add gateway IAM role as project member to enable Athena data queries through SageMaker Unified Studio

The solution enables direct Power BI to SageMaker Unified Studio connections without third-party licensing while maintaining data governance through project-level access controls.
