Introducing SDK Client Warm-Up feature in the AWS SDK for Java 2.x

Developer Tools Blog

This article introduces the SDK client warm-up feature in AWS SDK for Java 2.x, which reduces cold-start latency by pre-initializing SDK components during application startup.

  • SdkWarmUp.warmUp() exercises the SDK request path before the first service call
  • Warms both service client and HTTP client, including connection setup and marshalling code
  • Available in Java SDK version 2.54.0 and later as part of sdk-core module
  • Can warm all clients on classpath or specify individual clients to avoid unnecessary initialization
  • Integrates with AWS Lambda SnapStart to include warm-up in snapshots for faster restores
  • Applicable to EC2, containers, and Lambda functions for improved startup performance

SDK client warm-up moves SDK initialization from first request to startup, benefiting both long-running services and Lambda functions with SnapStart.
