GA Release of the AWS SDK Java 2.x HTTP Client built on Apache HttpClient 5.6

Developer Tools Blog

This article announces the general availability of the Apache 5 HTTP client for AWS SDK Java 2.x, built on Apache HttpClient 5.6.

  • Replaces outdated Jakarta Commons Logging with modern SLF4J logging framework
  • Provides full compatibility with Java 21's virtual threads for improved concurrency
  • Receives active maintenance with regular security updates and bug fixes
  • Can coexist with Apache 4.5.x client in the same project without conflicts
  • Supports synchronous service clients only, like the 4.5.x version
  • Migration from Apache 4.5.x requires adding dependency and updating references
  • Offers identical configuration options to the Apache 4 client for easy transition

The new Apache 5 HTTP client modernizes Java SDK HTTP handling with better logging, virtual thread support, and active maintenance while maintaining API consistency.
