Amazon S3 Object Lock variable retention with event holds is now available in AWS GovCloud (US) Regions

Regional Expansion

This article announces the availability of Amazon S3 Object Lock variable retention with event holds in AWS GovCloud (US-East) and AWS GovCloud (US-West).

  • Apply WORM protection to objects with retention periods triggered by future events like contract closings or audits
  • Place event holds with retention duration; S3 protects objects while holds are active
  • Upon hold release, S3 retains objects for specified duration without extending retention unnecessarily
  • Event holds provide WORM compliance after triggering events, unlike legal holds that end immediately
  • Assessed for SEC Rule 17a-4(f), FINRA Rule 4511, and CFTC Regulation 1.31 compliance

S3 Object Lock event holds enable event-based retention compliance in GovCloud regions while meeting regulatory requirements.
