Apache Iceberg materialized views now support system-managed write protection

News

AWS announces system-managed materialized views for Apache Iceberg, which precompute expensive queries and protect results from unauthorized modifications.

  • Only AWS Glue can write materialized view data and definitions, preventing unauthorized changes
  • Results stored as standard Apache Iceberg tables in S3 Tables buckets
  • Any Iceberg-compatible engine can read the governed dataset directly
  • Automatic refresh scheduling keeps materialized views current
  • Available in all regions supporting Apache Iceberg materialized views

System-managed materialized views provide governed, consistent datasets that can be confidently shared across engines while maintaining data integrity.
