Control investigation costs before they start with AWS DevOps Agent
AWS Cloud Operations Blog
This article introduces the Investigation Cost Guardrail, an open-source AWS DevOps Agent skill that estimates investigation costs before billable queries execute.
- Classifies operations across AWS services (CloudWatch, X-Ray, Athena, DynamoDB, S3, CloudTrail) and third-party tools as billable or non-billable
- Resolves live, per-Region pricing from AWS Price List API at estimation time without hardcoded rates
- Uses four-layer architecture: native tool classification, heuristic verb-based rules, known-paid registry, and self-learning response validation
- Provides three decision outcomes: proceed within budget, warn on inefficiency, or halt and recommend cost-reduction alternatives
- Includes setup steps: grant pricing:GetProducts IAM permission, install skill via GitHub or direct upload, add space-level instruction, tune budget thresholds
- Demonstrates scenarios where scoped requests proceed, broad requests halt with priced alternatives, and no-spend instructions reroute to free APIs
The guardrail embeds cost awareness into autonomous AI agents, turning investigation expenses into transparent, user-controlled budgets that prevent unexpected cloud costs.
