Migrate SSIS packages to Aurora PostgreSQL – Part 1
Database Blog
This article demonstrates a systematic approach to migrating SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) packages to Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL using native features and AWS extensions through a Filter-Categorize-Simplify-Modernize methodology.
- Filter active packages by querying SSISDB catalog to identify in-use packages, typically reducing migration scope by 30-50%
- Categorize packages by complexity level (low, medium, high) to determine appropriate migration targets
- Replace Execute SQL Tasks with pg_cron scheduling and PL/pgSQL stored procedures
- Convert Data Flow Tasks with transformations into single PL/pgSQL procedures using JOINs and CASE expressions
- Export data to S3 using aws_s3 extension instead of file shares for durable, versioned storage
- Replace email notifications with aws_lambda extension invoking Lambda functions that publish to SNS topics
- Complex packages requiring orchestration are addressed in Part 2 using AWS Step Functions and Lambda
This approach enables efficient SSIS migration by leveraging PostgreSQL native capabilities for simple workflows while reserving cloud-native services for complex orchestration patterns.
