Migrate SSIS packages to Aurora PostgreSQL – Part 2

Database Blog

This article demonstrates how to migrate complex SSIS packages to AWS by replacing multi-step orchestration, conditional branching, and error handling with Step Functions state machines and Lambda functions connected to Aurora PostgreSQL.

  • Replace SSIS control flow with Step Functions state machines using Choice states, Catch blocks, and Retry policies
  • Convert SSIS For Each Loop Containers to Step Functions Map states for parallel iteration with configurable concurrency
  • Migrate SSIS Script Tasks calling external APIs to Lambda functions with Step Functions Parallel states for fan-out/fan-in patterns
  • Schedule Step Functions workflows using Amazon EventBridge Scheduler instead of SQL Server Agent
  • Implement error handling, notifications via SNS, and centralized API management with API Gateway
  • Monitor execution history through CloudWatch Logs and Step Functions console instead of SSISDB

The migration approach enables serverless, scalable ETL pipelines with built-in orchestration, retry logic, and observability across multiple AWS services.
