Amazon RDS for Oracle now supports minor version upgrade prechecks and a new event to reduce patching downtime.
- Run precheck_minor_upgrade procedure to validate upgrade conditions before maintenance windows
- Identifies issues like insufficient storage, invalid objects, or invalid triggers in advance
- Precheck is read-only and doesn't affect workload operations
- New RDS-EVENT-0596 emitted when DB instance accepts connections during patching
- Automate application reconnection via RDS event notifications or EventBridge
- Available in all AWS commercial and GovCloud (US) regions
These features enable proactive upgrade validation and faster application recovery, minimizing downtime during Oracle database maintenance.
