How U.S. Bank migrated 119 TB from Oracle Exadata to Amazon RDS for Oracle

Database Blog

This article describes how U.S. Bank migrated 119 TB across four Oracle Exadata databases to Amazon RDS for Oracle using an automated, config-driven pipeline.

  • Used Oracle Cross-Platform Transportable Tablespaces (XTTS) for block-level physical data migration while source remained operational
  • AWS DataSync achieved 80% in-flight compression, providing 4-5x effective bandwidth multiplier on bandwidth-constrained Direct Connect link
  • Amazon EFS served as shared staging layer between DataSync and RDS import, eliminating extra staging steps
  • Completed initial 119 TB baseline copy in 7 days with average 4-hour cutover downtime per database and zero data loss
  • Addressed challenges including 16 TB bigfile tablespace limits, HCC decompression, timezone mismatches, and post-migration performance tuning
  • Config-driven orchestration with 18 concurrent XTTS workers enabled fully automated, idempotent pipeline requiring minimal manual intervention

The pattern demonstrates that large-scale Oracle migrations are achievable with proper strategy, native tooling, and automation, scaling from single databases to full data center exits.
