Amazon EC2 announces AMI Watermarks for improved AMI governance

News

Amazon EC2 introduces AMI Watermarks, enabling you to embed custom identifiers in private AMIs that automatically persist across copies and derived AMIs for improved governance and tracking.

  • Watermarks automatically carry forward to AMIs copied across regions or created from running instances
  • Includes metadata such as AMI ID, owner ID, region, and creation timestamps for reliable provenance
  • Remains visible when sharing AMIs with other accounts
  • Combine with Allowed AMIs to restrict instance launches to approved watermarked AMIs
  • Available via AWS Management Console, AWS CLI, SDKs, and EC2 Image Builder
  • No additional cost; available in all AWS regions including China and GovCloud

AMI Watermarks improve AMI governance by enabling tracking, filtering, and enforcement of organizational policies across accounts.
