Amazon VPC now supports primary IPv6 address on an elastic network interface

News

AWS has introduced support for primary IPv6 addresses on Elastic Network Interfaces (ENIs) in Virtual Private Clouds (VPCs), providing enhanced network management capabilities:

  • The first IPv6 address on an ENI can now be set as immutable
  • Primary IPv6 address cannot be removed while the ENI is attached to an instance
  • Supports both Amazon-provided and Bring Your Own IP (IPv6) addresses
  • Similar to IPv4's primary address routing mechanism
  • Enables consistent traffic routing without address changes

The feature is available across all AWS commercial and GovCloud (US) Regions at no additional cost, offering improved network stability and predictability for IPv6 deployments.
