AWS Network Load Balancer now supports removing availability zones
News
AWS has introduced a new feature for Network Load Balancers (NLB) that allows customers to remove Availability Zones (AZs) from an existing load balancer.
- Previously, customers could only add AZs to an NLB
- Now users can remove AZs using ELB API, CLI, or Console
- Use cases include mergers, divestitures, data residency, and capacity changes
- Removing an AZ deletes the zonal Elastic Network Interface (ENI)
- Active connections to backend targets in the removed zone are terminated
- Zonal IPs and DNS names are released
The feature is available in all AWS commercial and AWS GovCloud (US) Regions, providing more flexibility in managing network infrastructure.
