Enhancing resource-level permissions for copying Amazon EBS snapshots

Storage Blog

AWS has announced enhanced resource-level permissions for the CopySnapshot action in Amazon EBS, allowing more granular access control when copying snapshots between regions and accounts.

  • Users can now specify additional resource-level authorization in IAM policies for source snapshots
  • Six new EC2-specific condition keys can be used to enforce permissions
  • Provides more control over which snapshots can be copied and by whom
  • Helps optimize resource usage and improve security compliance

The changes will be implemented gradually, with a transition period ending on September 30, 2025. Customers are advised to review and update their IAM policies to align with the new permission model.
