Defending Against SMS Pumping: New AWS Features to Help Combat Artificially Inflated Traffic

Messaging & Targeting Blog

AWS has introduced new features for SMS Protect to help combat Artificially Inflated Traffic (AIT), a growing threat in SMS messaging that cost businesses over $1 billion in 2023.

  • Two new capabilities introduced: Filter and Monitor modes
  • Filter mode automatically blocks messages exhibiting AIT patterns
  • Monitor mode provides insights and recommendations without blocking messages
  • No message fees are charged for blocked messages in Filter mode
  • Recommended steps include blocking countries where you don't do business and creating account-level Filter configurations

The new features are part of a multilayered security approach to protect businesses from SMS fraud, offering granular control and visibility into potentially malicious messaging traffic.
