Extend the Amazon Q Developer CLI with Model Context Protocol (MCP) for Richer Context

DevOps & Developer Productivity Blog

AWS has announced Model Context Protocol (MCP) support in the Amazon Q Developer CLI, enabling developers to connect external data sources for more context-aware AI assistance.

  • MCP allows integration of additional data sources directly into the Q Developer CLI
  • Developers can now provide database schemas, message formats, and other context to Q Developer
  • The protocol supports querying database structures, generating SQL queries, and creating documentation
  • Configuration is done through a simple `mcp.json` file that specifies external data sources
  • The initial example demonstrates connecting to a PostgreSQL database using an MCP server

This new feature significantly enhances Q Developer's capabilities by allowing more precise and context-aware code generation, query writing, and documentation creation across different data sources.
