Amazon MSK adds support for Apache Kafka version 4.0

Amazon Managed Streaming for Apache Kafka (Amazon MSK) now supports Apache Kafka version 4.0, introducing several key improvements:

  • New consumer rebalance protocol for smoother and faster group rebalances
  • Required upgrade to Java 17 for improved security and performance
  • Deprecation of metadata management via Apache ZooKeeper
  • Various bug fixes and system improvements

Customers can easily adopt Kafka 4.0 by:

  • Selecting version 4.0.x when creating a new cluster
  • Performing an in-place rolling update for existing MSK provisioned clusters

The update is available across all AWS regions where Amazon MSK is offered, with Amazon MSK ensuring cluster availability during the upgrade process.
