Mountpoint for Amazon S3 CSI driver v2: Accelerated performance and improved resource usage for Kubernetes workloads

Storage Blog

AWS has released Mountpoint for Amazon S3 CSI driver v2, a significant upgrade to their Kubernetes storage solution for accessing S3 objects. The new version offers several key improvements for containerized applications:

  • Efficient resource usage through pod sharing on the same node
  • Optimized performance with shared local caching capabilities
  • Support for EKS Pod Identity for streamlined credential management
  • Compatibility with Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) environments
  • Improved observability with Kubernetes-native logging

Key technical components include a CSI driver node, CSI driver controller, and Mountpoint pods. The driver allows Kubernetes applications to access S3 data through a file-like interface, with potential performance improvements up to 2x faster for large-scale workloads by eliminating redundant data caching.
