Introducing “default” instance categories for AWS Batch

AWS Batch has introduced new instance type categories called `default_x86_64` and `default_arm64` to improve instance selection for compute environments.

  • Replaces the previous "optimal" category which did not effectively match customer expectations
  • Provides dynamic instance type selection across different CPU architectures
  • `default_x86_64` covers x86 CPU instances
  • `default_arm64` includes Graviton processor instances like m6g, c6g, r6g, and c7g
  • Does not include accelerated instances by design

The new categories aim to help customers run workloads more efficiently and cost-effectively by automatically selecting newer, better-performing instance generations. Existing compute environments using "optimal" will remain valid until early November 2025.
