Introducing Amazon EBS Volume Clones: Create instant copies of your EBS volumes

AWS News Blog

AWS has introduced Amazon EBS Volume Clones, a new feature that enables instant creation of point-in-time copies of EBS volumes within the same Availability Zone.

  • Allows quick creation of volume copies with a single API call or console click
  • Initially supports only encrypted volumes
  • Copies are available within seconds with single-digit millisecond latency
  • Ideal for development, testing, and database workloads
  • Volumes are immediately usable during background initialization

Key limitations include same-AZ copying, requirement for encrypted source volumes, and the need to manually ensure application consistency. Volume Clones complement EBS snapshots but are not a replacement for comprehensive backup strategies.
