Introducing Amazon EBS Volume Clones across AWS accounts

This article announces the extension of Amazon EBS Volume Clones to support cross-account copying, enabling users to create instant point-in-time copies of EBS volumes in other AWS accounts with optional re-encryption.

• Share EBS volumes across AWS accounts using AWS Resource Access Manager (RAM)
• Target accounts can copy shared volumes and optionally re-encrypt with a different AWS KMS key
• Unencrypted volumes and volumes with customer-managed keys can be shared; AWS managed key volumes cannot
• Monitor copy operations via AWS CloudTrail events and Amazon EventBridge notifications
• One-time copy fee charged to target account; regular EBS volume charges apply after creation
• Copied volumes must be created in the same Availability Zone as the source volume
• Available in all AWS Regions supporting EBS Volume Clones

Cross-account EBS volume clones enable secure data isolation between production and development environments while maintaining instant access to production data for testing purposes.
