This article announces the general availability of AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a new independent cloud infrastructure designed to meet Europe's strict data sovereignty and regulatory requirements.

  • First AWS Region located in Brandenburg, Germany; operates independently from existing AWS Regions
  • Physically and logically separate infrastructure with all components entirely within the EU
  • Operated exclusively by EU residents/citizens located in the EU with dedicated European legal entities
  • Enhanced data residency: all customer content and metadata remains within the EU
  • Technical controls prevent access from outside the EU; uses European trust service providers
  • Comprehensive AWS services available including EC2, Lambda, SageMaker, Bedrock, RDS, S3, and more
  • Backed by €7.8 billion investment; expected to contribute €17.2 billion to European economy by 2040
  • Supported by major partners including Adobe, Cisco, SAP, Snowflake, and others
  • Future expansion planned with Local Zones in Belgium, Netherlands, and Portugal

AWS European Sovereign Cloud provides European organizations with enhanced sovereignty controls while maintaining access to AWS innovation and comprehensive cloud services.
