Consolidate dual-stack architectures with listener rules for Network Load Balancer

AWS announces listener rules for Network Load Balancer, enabling a single dual-stack NLB to route IPv4 and IPv6 clients to same-family targets while preserving source IP addresses without protocol translation.

  • Route IPv4 clients to IPv4 targets and IPv6 clients to IPv6 targets using conditional listener rules based on source IP address type
  • Eliminates need to run two separate load balancers (one per IP version) with DNS splitting
  • Preserves original client IP end-to-end for both address families without requiring Proxy Protocol v2
  • Supports TCP, UDP, TCP_UDP, and TLS protocols with weighted target group forwarding for canary deployments
  • Available in all AWS commercial and GovCloud regions with no additional charges beyond standard NLB pricing
  • Consolidate existing dual IPv4/IPv6 NLBs onto single load balancer to reduce operational overhead and hourly charges

Listener rules simplify dual-stack architectures by enabling a single NLB to efficiently serve both IPv4 and IPv6 clients while maintaining source IP visibility for security and compliance requirements.
