Amazon RDS now provides visibility into storage volume initialization status

Amazon RDS now provides visibility into the initialization status of database storage volumes created from snapshots, helping users determine when storage is fully initialized and ready for latency-sensitive workloads.

  • New StorageOperationStatus and StorageOperationPercentProgress fields track initialization progress in real time
  • Volumes undergo initialization when restored from snapshots, with blocks downloaded from S3 and written to volume
  • Initialization can cause increased I/O latency until completion; previously RDS reported instances as available without performance signals
  • Fields also report storage optimization progress after storage modifications
  • Available by default for all RDS instances in all commercial AWS Regions and US GovCloud Regions
  • Accessible via RDS Management Console, AWS CLI, and AWS SDKs

This feature enables users to monitor storage initialization progress and time workloads to align with full provisioned performance availability.
